The Colour Index is a database that consolidates and contextualises 24 colours, aiming to make colour-experience and colour-information more accessible to blind people.

Because colour is created by our brain, it is technically an illusion. These illusions do however share a lot of valuable information, and influence how we respond to objects that reflect these colours. A banana begins green because of its chlorophyll which indicates it is unripe, and ripens to yellow as the chlorophyll breaks down, to finally turn brown as the sugar ferments, indicating it is sweeter and aged. This index prioritizes colour information, meaning and abstractions rather than colour aesthetics. Each are described in terms of history, fashion, etymology, associations, wavelength, taste, smell, emotion, temperature, colour code, texture, sound and pattern.
